One of the many perks of being an educator is the cyclical nature of the job. I like the consistency of a routine. There is a beginning, middle and an end. This year we had a wonderful beginning, worked hard to get through the middle and then we were abruptly cut off from being together with our students. Some may call it an end, but it wasn’t. We are still supposed to work. Back in March we thought that we would be gone for a few weeks, but those weeks have since passed. There have been two more extensions and recently we were told we will not resume classes on site for the remainder of this school year. Some families, staff members and children are longing for the usual consistent end to the year with end of year events and promotions. As it stands now, those will not take place during the usual time frame.

Many of you have been at Monte Verde for a number of years and know the types of celebrations that we have to commemorate the work that the students have completed; Open House, Art Show, Book Fair, Band Concerts, Talent Show, field trips, Word Millionaire Assembly, Outdoor Ed, and Fifth Grade Promotion. These events have all been cancelled.  Truly we are all in this together because the members of the MV Staff are just as disappointed as the students and their families. At this time we are discussing ways to appease our need for closure. We are also discussing ways to collect belongings and return school materials. I do not have any definite information because we do not have an actual timeline of lifting the shelter in place. I will share actual information as soon as decisions are made. Until then continue with the work that has been assigned. This work may look different across different grade levels and classrooms. Remember both the adults and children all have varying levels of online experience. We appreciate how hard families are working to balance schoolwork, home life and outside jobs. We know it is not a perfect situation, but working through this we can teach the children to be flexible, adaptive, and to persevere.
